THE RUNNER

In this activity, students work in pairs to copy down a story that I have placed on the wall at the front of the class. One student takes the role of the runner whilst the other becomes the writer. The runner has to run to the front of the class and try to memorise chunks of the story. He then runs back to the writer and dictates the story. The writer has to write the story that is being dictated to him by his partner. The runner keeps on going back and forth narrating the story to the writer. After some time, I shout out ‘Change’ and the students swap roles. The pair that writes the whole story without a mistake (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc) wins the game.
This lesson is one of my favorite because it can serve many purposes. You can use it to practice punctuation, spelling, handwriting, reading, listening, etc. The list is endless. And the best bit? It requires little preparation!
